Specifications and practical trade-offs
Documented manufacturer and manual information for this exact model. Published weight bases differ; deck size is not automatically cutting width.
| Power / drive | 2 × M18 simultaneously; Self-propelled rear-wheel drive |
|---|---|
| Deck / cutting path | 21-inch deck; 21-inch verified cut |
| Included battery | 2 × 12Ah; official box list HIGH OUTPUT 48-11-1812 |
| Charger | 48-59-1802 simultaneous dual-bay rapid charger |
| Height adjustment | 1–4 inches; 7 settings. |
| Published weight | 78 lb. Operator manual lists 78 lb; battery inclusion basis unspecified. Do not compare with explicitly bare/loaded weights. |
Supplied equipment: Grass bag; Mulch plug; Rear-side discharge chute.
Advantages
- Verified 21-inch cut; steel deck.
- Bag, mulch and rear-side chute included.
Drawbacks
- Requires two installed M18 packs.
- Substantial machine: the manual lists 78 lb without identifying the battery-weight basis.
Who gets the most from this M18 mower?
Battery-system ownership is the starting point. Two large M18 packs can serve suitable tools beyond the mower, which may make the package more useful to an existing owner. That does not mean every spare drill battery gives the same mowing experience. Capacity, battery output and having a complete charged pair affect how practical the mower is.
It is a weaker match for a tiny lawn, frequent lifting or someone who dislikes holding a drive paddle. A substantial deck can be reassuring in use while still being awkward at steps or when loading a vehicle. Consider the entire weekly routine, including moving and storing it.
HIGH OUTPUT or FORGE? Check the box list carefully
The official 2823-22HD page contains a battery-description conflict. Its box list identifies two HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0 batteries, part 48-11-1812, while the overview refers to included FORGE HD12.0 packs. Ask the seller for the actual battery model numbers. Do not assume the newer wording proves what is in a particular carton.
| Kit item | Manufacturer box list |
|---|---|
| Mower | 2823-20, 21-inch self-propelled model |
| Battery pair | Two HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0, 48-11-1812; verify against the seller's package |
| Charger | 48-59-1802 simultaneous dual-bay rapid charger |
| Clipping equipment | Grass bag, mulch plug and rear-side discharge chute |
Both batteries work together
This is a simultaneous two-pack mower. It will not run with one installed battery, and the manual says it stops when either pack is exhausted. Its charge display reflects the lower pack. A half-charged or much smaller second battery can therefore limit the useful session even when the other one still has energy.
The current manufacturer FAQ permits different capacities. For a predictable mowing plan, a matched, fully charged pair is the more straightforward starting point. This is different from the Makita GML01PL, which automatically switches between battery bays rather than requiring both packs to supply the mower together.
What the cutting evidence actually supports
Milwaukee's current runtime claim is up to 60 minutes when removing one inch of grass at a three-mph self-propelled pace. That is a manufacturer scenario, not a guaranteed result for thicker growth or a different battery package.
The battery-generation conflict matters more than comparing the headline number with another mower’s claim. The product information names FORGE in runtime prose while the box list names HIGH OUTPUT packs. Ask the seller for the actual part numbers and use the claim only with the configuration it describes. Two packs of the same advertised Ah do not establish equivalent runtime across different battery versions.
Standard and high-lift settings give different blade-speed behavior. High lift is an airflow option to consider for collection, rather than a reason to assume maximum speed is necessary for every pass. Do not confuse a high-lift mode with a stacked, two-blade cutting system.
The drive has two layers of control
A dial sets the maximum self-propelled speed, while the paddle lets you ease below that setting as conditions change. The operator manual confirms that drive is available with the blade stopped. That can be useful for moving between cutting areas when the blade needs to remain off.
If possible, check the grip, paddle reach and speed-dial position with the mower safely stopped before buying. Consider whether you can keep a comfortable grip while slowing and turning around beds. These are fit checks for your hands and route, rather than a claim that the controls are comfortable or uncomfortable for every operator.
Storage, lifting and blade ownership
The mower has three handle-height positions, a single height lever and folding upright storage. Its manual lists a 78-pound weight without clearly stating the battery basis. Do not use that number as a directly comparable loaded weight against another brand's explicitly bare mower.
The manual calls for battery removal before maintenance, avoiding hose cleaning and using two people when lifting. Check the exact mower blade part for the intended configuration. The official resources identify 49-16-2734 and 49-16-2735, but their descriptive labels vary between the current FAQ and manual. Confirm the part's current application rather than buying a generic 21-inch blade or fitting a second blade.
When another mower makes more sense
Use the main mower guide to compare complete kits. These differences are more useful than comparing nominal voltage or unrelated runtime claims.
| Alternative | Choose it when | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Makita GML01PL | You already own XGT tools and prefer automatic bay switching | Different battery system; inspect side-discharge suitability |
| Toro 21469 | You prefer a pace-sensitive handle to a thumb paddle | Four height-adjustment points; compare the handle approach and charging plan. |
| EGO LM2156SP | Interchangeable lower blades better match your clipping routine | Different controls and battery platform |
Before you buy
Choose this mower because the system, controls and construction suit your work. A premium kit is harder to justify if its batteries will rarely be used elsewhere or it makes routine transport uncomfortable.
- Confirm 2823-22HD and the actual HIGH OUTPUT or FORGE battery part numbers.
- Plan for two charged packs; one spare pack is not a complete second session.
- Check that 48-59-1802 and all three clipping attachments are supplied.
- Assess paddle comfort and the route between storage and lawn.
- Order replacement blades by approved part number and verify seller warranty terms.
Common questions
Will it run on one M18 battery?
No. Two charged M18 packs are required, and the mower stops if either is depleted.
Must the two batteries have identical capacities?
The current official FAQ says no. A matched, fully charged pair remains easier to plan around because the lower-capacity or lower-charge pack can end the session first.
Can I use drive with the blade stopped?
Yes. The operator manual specifically allows the powered drive to operate without the blade running.
Can I add a second cutting blade?
No. Milwaukee says this mower is engineered for a single blade. Use the supported part and installation instructions.
