Read four details before choosing a cord
Find the model and electrical nameplate on the actual mower. Then obtain the matching US instruction manual and locate its extension-cord table. You need the supply voltage, current, permitted length and minimum wire size together. A cord’s packaging cannot replace those model-specific requirements.
Finally, measure the path from the appropriate outlet to the farthest grass, following the route the cord will actually take. Going around a house, beds or a fence can add substantial distance. If you cannot stay within the permitted setup, change the mowing plan or consider cordless power instead of guessing.
Two verified 13A mower examples
The official manuals for the CRAFTSMAN CMEMW213 and BLACK+DECKER MM2000 put their 13A models in the greater-than-12-to-16A row at 120V. The table below preserves their stated limits. Confirm the instructions supplied with your unit.
| Total cord length | CMEMW213 manual | MM2000 manual |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 25ft | 14AWG minimum wire size | 14AWG minimum wire size |
| Over 25ft through 50ft | 12AWG minimum wire size | 12AWG minimum wire size |
| Over 50ft through 100ft | Not recommended | Not recommended |
| Over 100ft through 150ft | Not recommended | Not recommended |
What the gauge number does—and does not—tell you
A lower AWG number means a larger conductor. An undersized cord can cause voltage drop, reduced power and overheating. But wire size is only part of the selection: outdoor construction, suitable connectors, condition, total length and the mower’s instructions also matter.
Do not read “12AWG” as permission to add length indefinitely. A 100ft cord can be substantial and still fall outside these mowers’ recommended setups. Nor does a gauge table prove the household circuit is suitable for any other loads you connect. Ask a qualified electrician to resolve supply or outlet concerns.
Check outdoor suitability and protection
The CRAFTSMAN manual calls for outdoor-rated cable and GFCI protection. Inspect the jacket and both connectors for cuts, exposed wiring, damaged pins or other deterioration. Read the cord marking rather than judging suitability by a bright colour.
Use the plug configuration and cord retention method the mower specifies. Do not alter a plug to make it fit, bypass protection or treat a loose connection as normal. GFCI protection reduces a hazard; it does not permit mowing in rain or wet conditions when the manual prohibits them. Keep those operating restrictions separate from electrical protection.
Plan a route that stays clear of the blade
Lay out the mowing area using the manual’s routing and restraint instructions before starting. Think through turns and the return path as well as the first pass. Keep the cable clear of the cutting path, sharp edges, heat and locations where people will trip over it.
Trees, divided lawn sections and narrow passages can make a short route awkward. Do not pull the mower by the cable or yank a connector free. If the route becomes tangled or needs handling near the mower, stop and disconnect safely as instructed. A cable-management problem is a reason to rethink the route, not to keep mowing while distracted.
Stop when the setup shows a problem
A hot or discoloured connector, damaged cable, abnormal operation or repeated protective-device trips needs attention. Stop, disconnect safely and use the manufacturer’s or a qualified electrician’s guidance for the problem. Repeatedly resetting a trip does not identify its cause.
Inspect before each use and replace damaged cords rather than hiding damage with a casual repair. When the mower itself needs adjustment, cleaning or an accessory change, disconnect power and wait for moving parts to stop. See electric mower maintenance for the wider ownership routine.
When cordless is the more practical answer
If your routed reach exceeds the manual’s allowance, an extension-cord purchase cannot fix that mower’s suitability. The EGO LM2114 is a full-size push alternative for freedom from the cable. The Greenworks 25322 offers a compact cordless layout for tighter grass areas; check its battery, cut-height and capacity trade-offs.
Our corded mower guide compares named mower choices, while corded versus cordless helps decide the power format. This page explains manual selection and routing; it does not certify a cord or guarantee a household electrical setup.
Common questions
Is a 12AWG cord always enough for a lawn mower?
No. The exact model, current, total length, outdoor suitability, connectors and supply all matter. Follow the matching mower manual.
Can I join two cords to reach farther?
Do not assume this is permitted. Added connections do not extend the mower’s documented reach; confirm the complete setup with its instructions or manufacturer.
Can I use either example mower with a 100ft cord?
The reviewed 120V manuals for these 13A models do not recommend that length. Do not override them with a generic online gauge chart.
